Preparing your car for winter

You count on your car to take you safely to home, work and play. Before winter arrives, make sure your car is ready for the cold weather and winter storms.

  • Have your car serviced, and check:
  • Air and fuel filters – use additives and keep gas tank full, keep water out of the system
  • Antifreeze levels – sufficient enough to avoid freezing.
  • Battery & ignition system – clean battery terminals, in good condition
  • Brakes – check fluid levels and wear
  • Defroster and heater – make sure they work
  • Exhaust system - check for leaks
  • Gas tank – keep it at least a half full
  • Lights – all lights, including flashing hazard lights – make sure they work
  • Oil – get an oil change, check for weight and level
  • Tires – put on good winter tires, with good tread. In most areas, all-weather radials are sufficient for winter. Check out laws and recommendations in your area, to see if you need chains or snow tires with studs
  • Windshield wipers – consider installing heavy duty winter wipes, repair any problems, fill washer fluid

And very important - stock your car with supplies in case of an emergency:
